Year 6 Events Gallery 2020-21

Take a look at the fun things we have been doing in Year 6 this year.

Extreme Earth - Geography and Art - May 2021

Year 6 have been looking at natural disasters in a Geography and Art topic. In Geography, we looked at why volcanoes erupt and what causes an earthquake. In Art, we created some abstract art- take a look at our creations in the pictures. Some children even made their own volcano models in their own time at home!

RE 'Hot Seating' Lesson - March 2021

Year 6 have been reading the Exodus Story as part of their current RE topic 'Linking Christianity and Judaism', we have also watched clips from 'The Prince of Egypt', which is a film linked to the story. We discussed different parts of the story and then 'hot seated' different characters in the hot seat and put ourselves in someone else's shoes to answer the questions appropriately. The children had to answer questions as Moses and the Pharaoh. We have some brilliant actors in Year 6!

Electricity Science Topic - March 2021

During our 'Could You Be the Next Nintendo Apprentice?' science topic, we have had the electricity resources out. We have created series and parallel circuits and also investigated how the brightness of a bulb or the speed of a motor can be changed in a circuit. Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed using the different equipment and now know all the different symbols for the main components in a circuit.

Orienteering - March 2021

This half-term Year 6 have been enjoying doing OAA (outdoor adventurous acitivites) - with a focus on orienteering. We have been orientating more challenging courses (both indoors and outdoors), working on our leadership skills and discussing and evaluating strategies as a team to decide the most effective approach to use to overcome challenges/tasks. Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed doing something a little different in PE and have developed their team work skills even further too.

Children's Mental Health Week - February 2021

The theme this year for Children's Mental Health Week is 'Express Yourself'.
We thought about the questions:
What does express yourself  mean?
Why does finding healthy ways to express yourself matter?
How does being creative and expressing yourself make you feel?

The children in school and at home had a go at 'The Squiggle Game'. We enjoyed squiggling on a piece of paper and seeing what images we could see in the squiggles. It was lovely to do something a little bit different and having the opportunity to express ourselves.

Numeracy Live Lessons - January/ February 2021

During the lockdown, Year 6 have been doing 2 numeracy lessons a week via a live lesson on Google Classroom. The home learners have joined the children in school to do their maths worksheet together. It is lovely to see all of the children's smiley faces and we have enjoyed seeing each other again. Well done to the children at home who have been engaging with the live lessons.

Merry Christmas - December 2020

Year 6 wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Year 6 Christmas Party - December 2020

On Thursday 17th December Year 6 enjoyed their last Christmas party at St Thomas' Leesfield Primary! We played lots of different games and showed Miss Blyden, Mrs Pilling and Mr Hill our best dance moves- there are some 'movers and groovers' in Year 6!

Advent Hoop - December 2020

Year 6 - Candles/ Manger - LOVE

Circulatory System - December 2020

During one of our science lessons, Year 6 made a life-size diagram of the circulatory system. In small groups, one person lay down on a long sheet of paper, while the rest of the team drew around them. They then used this is a template to create a life-size diagram of the circulatory system. In their teams, they labelled the diagram to clearly explain what is happening. When finished, we wrote a description of how the circulatory system works to accompany our diagrams.

Gymnastics - November/ December 2020

In gymnastics, we have been working on confidently holding a range of individual and partner balances- demonstrating control, alignment of body parts and an understanding of our own centre of gravity. Year 6 have also been working on their rolling in isolation and in sequences. We have been putting these balances and rolls into challenging sequences linking different actions and with contrasting actions (different levels, speed, direction and use of different apparatus).

Periscopes - November 2020

During their WW1 history topic, Year 6 have been investigating what life was like on the Western front. We created persicopes following instructions and decorated them to fit their purpose. The class thoroughly enjoyed this task and loved having a go at using them. We have been learning all about life in the trenches and even wrote our own letters from a soldier on the frontline in WW1 (a local WW1 soldier from Lees - James Chapman).

Remembrance Day - November 2020

On the 11th Novemeber we held a whole-school 2 minute silence to remember members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty, as well as all those who have been involved with and affected by war and conflict. Year 6 made different poppy wreaths and took them to Lees Cemetery War Memorial, where we held our own 2 minutes of silence.

Theseus and the Minotaur PE Dance Lessons - September 2020

During our 'Ancient Greek' History topic we created dance sequences linked to the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. In dance, we have been working on using music to create imaginative movements and simple dances. Year 6 are working on performing with expression and emotion.

Geography - October 2020

As part of our Geography topic, we have been using six figure grid references, symbols and keys to help read ordnance survey maps.

Peer Assessing - October 2020

In our 'Could Spiderman Really Exist?' science topic, we wrote fact-files about a fictional animal. Year 6 then had the opportunity to read their partner's writing and assess it using the 'Top Banana' mark scheme. It was lovely to see the class giving positive feedback and next steps to their partner.

Samba Inspired Dancing - October 2020

We have been working on our dance skills in our indoor PE lessons. During our 'South America' Geography topic, we created simple dances to the song 'Samba do Brasil' from the film Rio. All of the class created brilliant simple dances using a variety of sequences and also evaluated other's performances. We are getting better in our dance lessons and have shown a huge improvement already this year!
